Why Outlander Season 4 would be the perfect time for a major cliffhanger

If there was ever a good time for a cliffhanger in a season finale, Outlander Season 4 would be that time. After all, we already know we’re getting another season.

Cliffhangers can be awful. We’re left with the fates of our favorite characters unknown. However, Outlander Season 4 has the perfect chance to offer a major cliffhanger; one that would have us “screaming,” as Diana Gabaldon has put it. After all, we already know there will be a fifth season!

This really is the perfect time to leave us with a major cliffhanger. While there’s Droughtlander to contend with, we know that the series is going to return. Unlike Timeless and Lucifer, which were both canceled this year with big cliffhangers (fortunately, Lucifer has been saved by Netflix), we’d know that the cliffhanger would be resolved. There’s no worry that we’ll forever wonder what’s in store for the characters. I still wonder what could have been for the likes of Dark Angel and Witches of East End.

On top of that, we have the novels. “The Fiery Cross” is the fifth book in the series and (likely) the book that the fifth season will be based on. That gives us some way to resolve a cliffhanger, as long as this isn’t a show-only storyline! There are likely some coming up with Murtagh still being alive and possibly part of the season.

More from Opinion

Need another reason? How about the fact that we don’t know how long the next Droughtlander will be. The cast gets a seven-month break from filming. Season 4 started filming just months after the third season wrapped. They were filming while the third season aired on Starz. We’re going to have a longer wait than we’d like for Outlander Season 5. A cliffhanger would give us lots to discuss between us and ponder during Droughtlander.

Cliffhangers can be good for shows. They keep people interested in what’s to come next, especially with a show like Outlander where there’s such a long break between season finales and premieres. Mind you, at least we’re not The Man in the High Castle, which is still to get a release date for season 3 or The Last Kingdom, which hasn’t even technically had an official confirmation of season 3 from Netflix or the BBC.

If the showrunners really wanted us on the edges of our seats in a season finale, Outlander Season 4 would be the perfect time for that.
