During the BAFTAs on May 13, Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan confirmed they have a seven-month break of filming. What exactly does that mean for the fifth season of Outlander?

Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan attended the BAFTA TV Awards. This gave Digital Spy a chance to chat to the pair about what’s coming up in the future and the plans for filming Outlander Season 5. It turns out the two have an extended hiatus. They’ll take a seven-month break or so, but what does that mean for Season 5?

Well, this could be why Season 4 is being pushed to November 2018. This would allow them to keep Droughtlander between Seasons 4 and 5 to a minimum since it can take about nine months to film a whole season. What it does seem to mean, though, is that the fifth season is going to wait until 2020.

More from Outlander News

Earlier today, here at Claire and Jamie we did suggest that early 2020 would be a possible premiere date for Outlander Season 5. That certainly now seems the case with the break.

Filming for Outlander Season 4 is set to finish in June since the convention schedule from July is packed. That would mean seven months from June would take them to around January 2019 before they start filming. If they then had nine months of shooting and a few months of editing, that would mean a January 2020 date is certainly probable.

This matches with earlier speculation. Outlander Season 3 premiered in September 2017. We expected Season 4 in September 2018 but we’re getting it two months later in November. So, a year and two months later would take us to January 2020. It really does look like this was why the date for the Season 4 premiere was pushed.

To be honest, they certainly deserve their break. The cast and crew work tirelessly. Balfe was back filming the day after the London Marathon and Heughan was back the day after the Stirling Marathon. That wouldn’t have been easy and their muscles would have likely ached, so they deserve this extended break.
