Diana Gabaldon shares that Outlander Season 4 was originally going to end with a cliffhanger. That isn’t the case anymore. Well, at least for now!

There are many questions about Outlander Season 4. With filming on its last week, many fans are curious about how the season will end. With a fifth and sixth season now confirmed, has that affected the way that the fourth season will end? Diana Gabaldon shares that it’s not affected anything, except that the original cliffhanger that was written in isn’t going to happen now.

Well, at least, that’s what it looks like. And it’s disappointing for us from the sounds of Gabaldon’s words. The Outlander author shares that fans were going to scream at the cliffhanger and she was excited about it when reading it in one of the first drafts of the scripts. When later versions came through to her, the cliffhanger had been removed.

That doesn’t mean the story is going to wrap, of course. It just means that we’re not going to be left on the edges of our seats, waiting (im)patiently for the next season. Well, we’ll still wait impatiently, but not quite on the same level as we would have with a major cliffhanger.

More from Outlander News

Previous seasons have ended with some type of cliffhanger. Outlander Season 1 finished with the Frasers sailing to France, Season 2 had the lead-up to the Battle of Culloden and Claire learning Jamie was still alive, and Season 3 had the couple landing in Georgia. The cliffhangers have just set up the next season’s storylines and it sounds like Outlander Season 4 may have been slightly different.

It’s surprising the cliffhanger hasn’t been used. One of the benefits of having two more seasons confirmed is that there’s no worry about not getting picked up after leaving it on a cliffhanger. That’s when cliffhangers really annoy fans! Outlander could have used this as setting up something big for the start of the fifth season–and whatever it was sounds like Diana Gabaldon was extremely happy with it.

We’re onto the last week of filming. Everything wraps at the end of the week. This is going to be exciting.
