Why has there been more Outlander filming news for Season 4 than previous years?
It seems like every week there is talk of a new Outlander filming location. This didn’t happen with Season 3 and before, so why is it happening now?
Outlander Season 4 filming is currently happening in Culross. Next week it will move to Kinloch Rannoch, which is where Craig na Dun scenes were previously filmed. We’ve also seen the cast and crew at places such as Falkland in Fife and Cumbernauld Glen.
It seems like every week there is a new location. While it’s awesome as fans to see that cast getting dressed up and getting some hints of the things to come, it brings up a major question. Why didn’t we get all these before?

Back in Scotland full time
Outlander Season 4 has brought the series back to Scotland. Well, the filming is back in Scotland. The show is actually set mostly in the Colonies, but the showrunners decided to keep the filming in Bonnie Scotland. After all, some of the episodes will be set at Lallybroch and in Inverness. It would be difficult jumping back and forth and expensive to have two sets of crew members.
Previous seasons have mostly been set in different countries. And the climates of those countries meant filming had to move elsewhere. The Paris storyline needed architecture that looked like France and the Jamaica storyline needed the heat and sandy beaches.
Filming of Outlander Seasons 2 and 3 would have been accessible if you’d have been in the right country. Well, for some of it. A lot of Season 3 was indoors, which have always (and always will be) been kept private from the public. And of course, Season 1 was new and most people had no idea what to look out for! The filming was there but you wouldn’t have realized what you were seeing!
Outlander Season 4 is moving indoors now. You may find that there aren’t as many snaps of the stars walking between film sets. However, there will likely be many more to come in the future.
So far, Outlander filming is just over the halfway point and on track for a June/early July finish. With so many conventions already planned for July onward, the series needs to wrap filming in June to keep things on schedule and stress-free.
