STARZ has been quiet about Outlander Season 5 casting. The only news we’ve had is from management companies. When will the big announcements be made?

It’s hard being a Sassenach right now. STARZ and the whole Outlander production has been quiet about Season 5. There are many reasons for this, but what’s surprising is that we’ve not heard a blip about casting.

The only casting news we’ve had has been from management companies. While we’re certainly not complaining about getting that news and the chance to welcome new actors into the show family, it’s concerning that STARZ hasn’t made any announcements about the big characters of the season.

More from Opinion

“The Fiery Cross” sees many major roles, both male and female. Whether it’s Buck MacKenzie, Malva Christie, the Beardsley twins, or even some of the extra Regulators or Redcoats, we’ve had nothing. Shouldn’t there have been some news by now?

Well, the show hasn’t been entirely silent. Earlier this year, we got to meet the cat playing Adso, who is certainly making a home for himself on the set. This followed suit with Season 4 when Rollo was the first new addition announced. A few months later, we learned that Maria Doyle Kennedy and Ed Speleers were joining the series.

The casting of Aunt Jocasta and Stephen Bonnet was made during the Season 3 run, two months before the season finale. That wasn’t possible with Season 5 since pre-production work was underway during Season 4 airing. The Season 5 filming didn’t start until April 2019 so most of the casting wouldn’t have happened until close to the end of the fourth season airing on STARZ.

However, the bigger roles must have been cast by now. That is if the show is working with the book storyline. It’s possible that books are being combined or that some of the storylines are being skipped to condense the largest book in the series into one 12-episode season.

STARZ likes to space out casting announcements. While Kennedy and Speleers were announced in October 2017, it wasn’t until January 2018 that Colin McFarlane was announced. Then in May 2018, we found out about Billy Boyd and four others. Yet there were plenty of others who didn’t get official casting announcements and we learned after the episodes aired who they were.

We could hear something soon about Outlander Season 5 casting. However, the news is only just out that Season 5 won’t premiere until early 2020 and now we’ve learned about two actors joining the series. We may have to wait another month for some bigger casting news. I think it will come soon, though!
