Outlander Season 1, Episode 6 was an essential episode to tell us why Claire would need to marry someone. Here’s a look back at the ratings.

When it comes to important episodes, there’s no doubt that Outlander Season 1, Episode 6 is essential. It’s the one before the wedding but sets up all the reasons why Claire needed to marry someone within the MacKenzie clan. Who would that someone be? We got to find out at the very end of the episode.

Naturally, episodes that have some important moments for Claire and Jamie are the ones that tend to see the highest ratings. That was definitely the case for Episode 6, titled “The Garrison Commander.” As it’s the anniversary of when the episode aired for the very first time, it only seems fitting that we look back at the ratings now.

More from Opinion

According to TV Series Finale, the live + same day ratings were up for both the key demo and the total number of viewers. They were up by 15% and almost 16% respectively from the previous episode, taking the total number of viewers back over the million.

This is only looking at those who tuned in live on the physical channel. It doesn’t include those who watched on the app either on the day or later in the week. It certainly doesn’t look at all those who have watched it since through other methods. These ratings are excellent for a network like STARZ, especially the total audience, which is the most important for a premium cable network with streaming app.

The spike made one thing clear. People wanted to see more Claire and Jamie together. It was a relatively slow burn to the relationship (both in the book and show), and this episode finally gave us something happening between them after all those hints along the way.

Another reason this episode was important was that we got to see more of Tobias Menzies as Captain Black Jack Randall. It was a chance to see if there was just a hint of humanity within him—something we actually only saw in the second season when it came to his brother. It would set up this chase between Randall and Claire, which would serve as the driving force to marry Claire and Jamie in the next episode.
