Faith’s birthday in Outlander: Were we robbed of Claire’s moment in Paris in 1766?
May 12 marks a bittersweet day in the world of Outlander. It’s Faith’s birthday. After reading Voyager recently, I can’t help but wonder if we were robbed of a particular moment in Paris 1766.
Outlander Season 3 left out a large chunk of storyline because of time and budget. I understand the reasons, but as we mark Faith Fraser’s birthday, I can’t help but feel a little robbed. And it’s more because of how much Faith’s storyline touched me during Season 2 and how devastatingly beautiful Caitriona Balfe’s acting was throughout the stillbirth scene.
If you haven’t read “Voyager” and you don’t want spoilers, this isn’t going to be a post for you. I do recommend the best Claire and Jamie moments from the whole of Outlander instead. Otherwise, we are getting into spoilery territory for show-first or show-only fans.

During “Voyager,” Claire and Jamie go back to Paris. They need help from Jared and this part was avoided in Season 3 because of a quick mention that Jamie had made contact with Jared to get a ship to get to Jamaica. The plot in Paris wasn’t all that important for the story but it was a beautiful one for Claire.
While Jamie is doing his thing, Claire heads to L’Hôpital des Anges, where she finds that Mother Hildegarde is still alive. We got to see this relationship form and grow, which led to the chance for Claire and Jamie’s stillborn baby to be born on consecrated ground.
As a stillborn, Faith shouldn’t have been baptized. However, Mother Hildegarde broke the law because of her relationship with Claire. She baptized the baby and claimed Faith died afterward, so Faith was buried in the cemetery.
When Claire visits L’Hôpital des Anges again, she goes back to Faith’s grave. This is a chance to see her first daughter again, see what had been lost.
It’s the emotion in the writing that gets me. After more than 20 years, Claire is surprised by the emotion she still feels. You never get over the loss of a child.
And this is why I’m so glad the show added moments where Faith was mentioned. I loved that we saw Claire and Jamie discuss their first daughter, knowing how the loss would still affect them more than 20 years later. Because of that, I don’t mind as much that we didn’t get the Paris moment.
