Outlander is more than just Claire and Jamie’s love story now

Outlander started as a love story between Claire and Jamie. That’s certainly grown to beyond that and it’s certainly become about family.

When Outlander began, it was focused on Claire and Jamie’s love story. In fact, the first novel alone could be considered a romance. It’s only when you look at the second novel and beyond that it’s no longer a romance (romances don’t have sequels). However, as time as gone on, the books have become more than just Claire and Jamie’s love story.

I know this isn’t what all fans want to hear — and many won’t agree. But personally, the books have grown past the love story of Claire and Jamie and into a story about family. It’s a story about life and while that includes romance, sex, and their connection, it also includes everything that that comes with life, including their daughter.

More from Opinion

The story has moved beyond to just being in Claire’s point of view. From the second book, we got the viewpoints of Roger and Jamie. Now we’re getting the viewpoints of Brianna, Willie, and even Lord John Grey. This means in the show each of these characters will need some time to focus on them.

Within the stories from the other characters, there are elements that touch on Claire and Jamie. But then, the same can be said the other way around. In Claire’s POV, there will be mentions of Brianna, Roger, and even John. From Jamie’s viewpoint, there will be discussions of Willie, Brianna, and Fergus.

To remain true to the books, the show is going to have to give each of the characters time on screen without losing the connection between Claire and Jamie. It’s not going to be easy (and not everyone is happy with the fourth season’s focus) but it may be a little easier now that most are at Fraser’s Ridge for the time being.

While Outlander is a fantasy with the time travel, there are elements that need to remain true to real life. That includes the growing of a family and changing focus from one of just a love story to one of all life’s focuses.
