Did Stephen Bonnet make it out of the prison alive on Outlander?
The last we saw of Stephen Bonnet was him reaching for the keys on Outlander Season 4, Episode 12. Did he make it out of the prison alive?
Outlander Season 4, Episode 12 delivered a powerful episode. When it came to Brianna and Lord John’s storyline, it combined with Fergus getting Murtagh out of jail. The keys to the jail cell were dropped just outside Bonnet’s cell, which gave him an opportunity to escape. Did he manage to make it out alive?
Those who have read the book know that this storyline worked out a little differently. However, the chances made certainly made sense. What is certain is that most of the main storylines are going to play out as expected and that should mean Stephen Bonnet’s.

I won’t share book spoilers from this point. Those who haven’t read the books yet or are purposely staying a book behind can read this. It’s all speculation based on the events we saw in the episode.
As everyone focused on getting Murtagh out of prison, nobody paid attention to Stephen Bonnet. He had reached for the keys and managed to get them. So, it would suggest that he managed to escape. The question is whether he had time to get his hands free from the cuffs and get out of the prison before it exploded.
There’s a high chance he did. While we didn’t see him escape, we also didn’t see his body. On TV, nobody is dead unless you see death happen on screen or it’s somehow confirmed. For example, Smallville confirmed Jason Teague’s death in the Season 5 premiere because at the end of Season 4, the character was given a chance to come back if Jensen Ackles didn’t take on the role of Dean Winchester in Supernatural.
Managing to get to the keys makes it clear that Bonnet was going to escape. He’s a slippery fellow. If Outlander really wanted us to wonder about his fate, it would have been best leaving us with him just looking at the keys or attempting to reach for them and just missing. I think getting the keys was the show’s clue that he had escaped.
