Why I didn’t realize Claire and Jamie weren’t in much of Outlander’s Providence

There have been two episodes of Outlander Season 4 without Claire and Jamie. I’ll admit that I didn’t notice too much in either of them, certainly not in Providence. That’s nothing bad against the leading couple but says everything good about Brianna and Roger.

Outlander Season 4, Episode 12 featured Claire and Jamie for about 10 seconds while Brianna showed Lord John Grey the letter from Jamie. It wasn’t until the end of the episode that I realized this happened. And I didn’t actually miss them.

This isn’t anything bad against the Frasers. I love seeing their story grow, but I’ve enjoyed a lot of the focus on Brianna and Roger this season. These are two characters who will have more importance in the storylines in the future, so seeing their stories develop this season has been important.

More from Opinion

“Providence” delivered on that. Throughout the tent scene between Roger and Father Alexandre, we got to see Roger’s opinions on everything that had happened so far. While a little of it was a recap of the things we’d seen, this was a chance to see how those events had changed his thinking.

He fell in love and followed a girl. Despite everything, his feelings for Brianna hadn’t changed. And while he mentioned he was looking out for number one, in the end, he couldn’t let Alexandre suffer.

Roger is a changed man, but at the same time, he’s still very much the guy he has been this whole time. It’s impossible to change the root of your personality and that’s what this storyline showed us.

Then there was Brianna’s storyline, as she finally got a chance to face Bonnet. It’s another important storyline for her character development, as we see her inner strength. She gets to put the rape behind her and move forward in her life, believing that Bonnet is going to the grave without any hope at all.

Brianna refuses to be a victim but a survivor. She’s accepted her child and knows that she can love this child no matter what and Bonnet isn’t ever going to be a part of the child’s life. This closure will help her move forward.

Of course, then we had the Fergus/Murtagh storyline. This brought drama into the Brianna storyline, which was a necessary part, as well as getting Fersali to Fraser’s Ridge for Outlander Season 5.

With so much happening, Jamie and Claire walking through the woods didn’t seem as enthralling and I certainly didn’t miss it. We know their relationship is on the mend again and the finale will be when their action happens.

While I wouldn’t want every episode to be without Claire and Jamie, the odd one without them works. This show is growing into an ensemble cast and there are many characters I want to see more of. “Providence” showed that the storylines will work.
