After the way the last episode ended, there are many expectations for Outlander Season 4, Episode 5. Just what can we take away from the promo and synopsis?

Outlander Season 4 is certainly increasing the intensity. Episode 5, titled “Savages,” will see Claire play peacemaker, while Roger finds out exactly what Claire has done. The promo and synopsis are here and it’s time to break them down and figure out what to expect.

This is a point that many have waited for, both book-first and show-first/-only fans. Just what’s about to happen?

As usual, there are spoilery teases in this post based on the promo and synopsis. If you don’t want to be spoiled, I recommend reading Jamie’s best moments from the last episode. Before I break everything down, here are the promo and synopsis to look through.

"Claire’s medical expertise proves invaluable, but she soon finds herself in the role of peacemaker when a Cherokee tribe encroaches on superstitious immigrants’ land. In the 20th century, Roger travels to Inverness in search of a missing Brianna, only to make a shocking discovery."

1. Brianna has planned her return

At the very end of the promo, there’s a glance of Brianna heading through the stones. This is a scene we’d already seen in the Outlander Season 4 trailer, with Tobias Menzies’ voice playing over the top of the scene. Brianna has made her decision to head through the stones.

However, it’s clear that she’s planned this. She’s dressed ready for the time period she’s aiming to head back to, a cloak over her for some warmth.

Something important to see is the bangle on her left wrist. That’s the gift Roger gave her, showing that she still means the world to her and she wants to remember him while living a life in the 18th century.

2. Roger isn’t going to just give up on her

Meanwhile, in Inverness, Roger is looking for Brianna. He knows that this is where she’d head to. Gale told him that Brianna had gone to see her mother.

I’ve theorized whether Roger would head to the past to find Brianna or not. It’s clear that she still means the world to him. Whether he’s trying to stop her or just make sure she’s not alone is unclear. Would he try to prevent her from leaving to go to another time?

I’m curious why nobody has questioned why she only wanted a one-way ticket to Craig na Dun.

3. Claire finds a friend in Adawehi

Remember the image of Claire and Adawehi talking? This is where that scene comes in. After gaining an understanding with the Cherokees in the last episode, it’s time for a friendship to form. Claire and Adawehi will be two that connect over their love of healing.

The last we saw of Adawehi, she’d told Claire about the magic inside. There was a beautiful prophecy that comes directly out of the books. Will she explain more of the meaning behind her words or will the two just connect?

What is interesting is that Claire understands Adawehi’s native tongue. Claire does have experience in learning other languages, whether it was French while serving there or Gaelic while with the Scots. Now she’s learning the language of her neighbors, showing respect.

4. There are new settlers

Fraser’s Ridge is growing. There’s clearly some sort of time jump in Outlander Season 4, Episode 5, allowing for Claire and Jamie’s home to be built and finding settlers. There are clearly some new settlers and one of them will cause problems with the Cherokees.

I love that at one point the Cherokees point out that the water belongs to no-one. Whether on the Fraser’s land or not, there would always be an understanding that water is a source of life and necessary between them because of their friendship.

What I’m curious at is why this settler is so annoyed. The synopsis tells us he’s a superstitious settler, which suggests a certain illness storyline is going to show up in the episode.

5. Claire needs to protect herself

The arguments over water are clearly going to escalate. I don’t want to spoil anything by looking at the storylines for the books for those who are watching the show first. However, looking at the trailer, Claire feels like she’s in danger because she loads a rifle and is aiming at someone.

Who is it that’s attacking her? Where’s Jamie in all this? Young Ian and Rollo don’t even appear to be around, which begs the question what they’re up to. It’s possible they’re only out hunting, but they could also be away for a prolonged time.

However, I suspect it’s something to do with a certain illness ravishing the area. Without spoiling, Claire’s medical knowledge is definitely going to play a part very soon.
