While we may be getting ready for the fourth season next weekend, many are looking ahead at Outlander Season 5. How long will it take to film? How long will Droughtlander be?
Outlander Season 4 premieres next weekend. We have eight days to wait and it’s certainly getting exciting. And while we are excited, many are looking ahead. We need to know how long Droughtlander will be and that means wondering how long it will take to film Outlander Season 5.
While explaining why the show will never get ahead of the books, Diana Gabaldon shared how long it takes to film a season. She shared that it takes 18 months to film a season.
That could take into account the pre- and post-production stages. We know from Outlander Season 4 filming that it takes about nine months to get the episodes physically filmed. After that, there is the long post-production stage to edit all the episodes, decide on bits that need cutting, and assessing whether there is a crucial need to refilm moments (not usually the case, unless there’s an emergency).

The pre-production stage involves the writing, set design, costuming, and much more. It’s easy to see how everything together could take 18 months to complete. The bulk of it is during pre-production and filming.
So, does that mean there will be a long Droughtlander while we wait for Outlander Season 5? Well, the good news is the pre-production is already underway. The writers’ room has been hard at work for the last few months. Even before Season 4’s post-production had started, Matt B. Roberts was already rereading “The Fiery Cross” to pick out the crucial storylines and know the sets and costumes that would be needed.
Outlander Season 5 filming will take place from February, based on a comment from Caitriona Balfe about having seven months off. If it takes nine months of physically filming and a couple of months of post-production, we could likely expect the fifth season to premiere sometime in February to April 2020.
This could mean a slightly longer Droughtlander than last time, more in line with the Droughtlander between Seasons 2 and 3. However, this will depend on the length of the winter break in airing and when the fourth season finale will air on STARZ.
