Why did Terry Dresbach opt for the Bat Dress in Outlander Season 3?
During an interview with SYFY Wire, Terry Dresbach explained her reasons behind the Outlander Season 3 Bat Dress. Think what you like about the dress, the creation reasonings certainly make a world of sense.
If you knew you were going through time, what would you do? What would you take with you? Where would you store it all? These are all questions Claire had to answer in Outlander Season 3, and Terry Dresbach gave her the perfect outfit to help.
In the novels, Claire doesn’t quite plan in the same way. She buys a dress instead of makes her own, but Outlander costume designer, Terry Dresbach, didn’t want to stick with that. Instead, we got what has been affectionately nicknamed the Bat Dress.
While there were some complaints, the idea behind the dress made sense. And I didn’t need the interview with SYFY Wire to understand the reasoning behind the dress. There were so many hidden pockets and it was made out of raincoats to ensure Claire was ready for whatever the 18th century threw at her.

The first time she went through with nothing and had to make do. This time, she’d managed to stock up on some antibiotics, take some form of money with her, and have some gems for navigating through the stones. The dress was a highly convenient way of managing it all with all those extra pockets.
And that Bat Dress soon became a fashionable piece of clothing. You can’t tell me the photo of Claire is on the ship in the skirt, shirt, and belt doesn’t look good.
Various parts of the dress became useful at different points of the voyage to Jamaica. A voyage she never anticipated, she was able to get a headscarf from her shirt, use her skirt for a luggage holder when she jumped overboard, and protected herself from the elements.
Why hidden pockets? Well, her items from the future couldn’t exactly be found, right? She needed to protect those photos of Brianna and the antibiotics!
We know Claire as a smart woman, so why wouldn’t she create something like this? She wasn’t going to fashionable but practical. Terry Dresbach gave us that perfectly and I’m honestly nervous about seeing her step down for Outlander Season 5.
