There were some excellent lines in the second episode of Outlander Season 1, bringing out the sense of the period and building the drama. Here are the five best.
Outlander Season 1, Episode 2 had some excellent moments. This was the episode that brought out the full essence of the 18th century and showed us the realities of the search to create this production. Of course, it was also the introduction of a number of iconic characters.
There were some excellent lines, building the story, the tension, and the setting. Here are the five that stood out for me, making them the best for the episode.
I bandaged his shoulder, but I wasn’t able to clean it or dress it properly. I must tend to it before it gets infected. I mean, inflamed.

After initially looking around and getting a sense of the place, she turned straight back to being a nurse. In a way, I saw this as a coping mechanism. Having a patient to treat was perfect for her since she could be useful and take her mind out of the whole situation. Plus, this pulled us to the time period, as we were reminded that certain medical terms weren’t used or understood.
Everybody calls me Mrs. Fitz. You may also.
I love this moment between Claire and Mrs. Fitz. While there was still a little hostility, Mrs. Fitz instantly made it clear that she could warm up to Claire. This was a sign that she would take Claire at face value while figuring out more about her.
Claire had proven her abilities as a healer, helping Mrs. Fitz trust her. Allowing the use of the shortened version of the name was a perfect way to show that.
Ah, well, I suppose it’s whatever the English say it is.
One of my favorite moments was how quickly Jamie trusted Claire. He didn’t listen to the gossip and made up his own mind based on Claire’s actions–and how she treated him. Once the tension was gone from how she’d react to the scars, they could move onto talking about the scars happened.
This line did make me laugh, but it’s also important for the whole of Jamie and Claire’s story. It hints at some of the reasons the Scots hated the English. Later in this scene, Jamie points out that people don’t like her because of her Englishness and this line points out why.
No, actually. He’s not alive.
Claire didn’t lie. Frank isn’t alive in this time. This is before she finds out if she’ll be able to get out of the 18th century, before there’s hope of getting back to Craig na Dun. She’s raw, emotional, and grieving. It’s a beautiful moment between Jamie and Claire as he just comforts her instead of asking questions.
I know who you are, Claire.
I missed this at first, not realizing who Geillis was. The more I watch Outlander Season 1, Episode 2, the more I love this line. The way Lotte Verbeek says it is ominous and makes it clear that she knows more than she is letting on. There’s a hint that she’s read all about Claire in the future, just without anyone else knowing that.
It was this scene that drew me into Geillis and made me intrigued about her. This line certainly helped.
