Diana Gabaldon accepted the Saturn Award for Best Fantasy TV Series on behalf of Outlander showrunners Ron D. Moore, Matt B. Roberts, and Toni Graphia. While she didn’t win it herself, she certainly deserves the bragging rights.

For some strange reason, an argument has started on Twitter. Outlander fans have decided to start a debate over Diana Gabaldon accepting the Saturn Award for Best Fantasy TV Series. Some fans were quick to congratulate the author of the novels, while others were quick to point out that she didn’t win it. The award is for the TV series, so technically not for the author of the novels. However, Diana Gabaldon certainly deserves the bragging rights.

Without Herself, we wouldn’t have the series. Moore, Roberts, and co. wouldn’t have had a series to develop in the first place. We wouldn’t have Claire and Jamie to see as #RelationshipGoals or enjoy the world of the 18th-century come to life. This was something all in Gabaldon’s mind, making it her baby.

More from Opinion

While Gabaldon says “the books are the books, the show is the show,” there’s no denying that the show is around because of the books. Nobody could have created such an intricate and beautiful world like Herself. The characters wouldn’t have come to life in our minds, leading to the actors bringing them to life on the screens. There wouldn’t have been the call for this time-traveling, historical-fiction, love story.

Further supporting that Gabaldon certainly deserves some bragging rights for the Saturn Award win is that she is a consultant on the show. While not all her suggestions are listened to, she certainly has some say in the production. She offers her insights to the actors and shares whether she things the fans will be receptive to one change or another.

No, the win wasn’t for the books and, therefore, wasn’t for Diana Gabaldon. The win is technically for the TV series, but without Herself we wouldn’t have that and so it’s also a win for her.

Of course, this doesn’t take away from the success of the show. Everyone involved deserves bragging rights for the TV series. As many fans have said, congrats to Diana Gabaldon, Ron Moore, and everyone else involved in the creation for the Best Fantasy TV Series Saturn Award. Here’s to another year to defend the title!
