Fergus and Marsali’s story will need to be adapted slightly for Outlander Season 4. Does this mean there’s a change of plan for the Fersali baby?
When Outlander changes one thing in the TV series, it has a butterfly effect. We’ve seen how that works in Season 1, leading to disappointment for many in Season 3 with regards to Laoghaire’s storyline. Now a storyline in Outlander Season 4 will need to change due to one change in the third season. It’s all about Fergus and Marsali.
Caution: There are spoilers from the books if you’re not caught up yet.

Straight after the third season finale, I brought up a question: what would happen to Fersali now? The third book, “Voyager,” saw them remain in Jamaica. However, they were both on the ship back to Scotland in the season finale. We know both have made it to the Colonies in the fourth season after that pre-season 3 finale message with Caitriona Balfe, Sam Heughan, Cesar Domboy, Lauren Lyle, and John Bell all in costume.
There’s one big question for Outlander Season 4, especially since Domboy (and possibly Lyle) have finished filming. Will there be a Fersali baby?
Why did Fersali remain in Jamaica?
At the end of the third book, Fergus and Marsali had to remain behind. Marsali was pregnant and it wouldn’t be safe to have a pregnant woman on board a ship–having a woman on board the ship was bad enough! Fergus remained behind with his wife, so Jamie and Claire could take Young Ian back home.
Of course, the three ended up washed ashore in the Colonies. Jamie got word to Fergus, so Fersali could join them both in the Colonies. Marsali gave birth by the end of the fourth book.
The major change has been that Marsali isn’t pregnant yet. At least, she’s not knowingly pregnant. Outlander Season 4 could always lead to Marsali finding out she is expecting a baby.
Would Outlander change this storyline?
There were hints in Outlander Season 3 that this storyline would change. Marsali made a point in asking Claire for tips to avoid pregnancy. Claire promised to share some, knowing that Marsali temporarily just wants to enjoy her life as just a married couple and not a mom. She has plans for a family later.
However, it’s possible that this was added in due to time constraints. The beautiful Fersali wedding didn’t come until Episode 11, “Uncharted.” There were just two episodes left and they had to be focused on the main storyline. Adding in the Fersali pregnancy would have been a little too much. Plus, things have to work differently when you’ve got actors contracted for roles.
So, it wouldn’t be surprising if there is the plan on having the Fersali baby in Outlander Season 4, but just with a slight jig to the timeline. This would allow for less explanation in how to get Fersali back across from Jamaica and keep the focus on the Colonial storyline (along with Brianna and Roger’s storyline in the 20th century).
While I can’t say for definite the Fersali baby is coming, I suspect it will. After all, people love Marsali and Fergus together and this baby (and their relationship) becomes a bigger part in the future books. It wouldn’t make sense to completely leave it all out!
