Outlander Season 3 made a major change to the Voyager books, but what does that mean for the fourth season?

For those who don’t want spoilers from the books, this isn’t going to be an article for you. There are major spoilers from “Voyager” and beyond. If you already know of the changes from the end of “Voyager” then the rest is mostly speculation.

It’s no secret that the Outlander showrunners made some major changes to the “Voyager” story. The very end didn’t just skip over a certain chance on the high seas, but also a change in the people accompanying the Frasers on the Artemis.

Fergus and Marsali joined Claire, Jamie and Young Ian on the Artemis to get back home. This didn’t happen in the novels, as the two chose to remain in Jamaica. After all, they’re newlyweds and they wanted some time apart. Now that Marsali was married to Fergus, there was no way that Laoghaire could commend her return.

More from Spoilers

In the Outlander Season 3 finale, Fergus and Marsali were spotted below deck of the Artemis, where it was safer for them. They were still on board when it shipwrecked in Georgia but will most likely survive. After all, Cesar Domboy and Lauren Lyle are already confirmed for the fourth season.

This change has a knock-in effect for Season 4. The two are already in America. Jamie has no need to send word to Fergus to come. Fergus will have no reason to leave a pregnancy Marsali in Jamaica (so she can’t accidentally be forgotten about)! Here’s a look at what it could mean for the fourth season.

More Claire and Marsali bonding

It wasn’t easy for Claire when she returned to the past. She not only learned Jamie had an illegitimate son, but also that he had remarried to the woman who accused her of being a witch. Marsali was understandably devastated that Jamie and her mother’s marriage was ending because of Claire’s return, who had been presumed dead for 20 years.

Throughout the back half of Outlander Season 3, there were moments for the two to bond. This was especially the case for Marsali’s wedding to Fergus. Claire offered a little advice and promised more on preventing pregnancy and enjoying sex with her husband. It was a beautiful look at the things that could come once they find somewhere to call home.

More Fergus and Marsali moments

It’s difficult to show the things happening outside of Claire and Jamie. Fergus and Marsali have become integral characters, but many fans want most of the focus on the two that started the story. With Fergus and Marsali in America, there is the ability to focus on them a little. Their relationship can be expanded.

The two do become important in later books. It only makes sense to flesh that relationship out more earlier on. Give us a reason to fully invest in the two.

More people to trust and lean on

Claire and Jamie find it hard to trust anyone. After all, the Duke of Sandringham clearly had no intention of pardoning Jamie and turning Black Jack Randall over. Then he arranged for the rape of Claire and Mary Hawkins. Then there was the trouble on the Porpoise in the last season and difficulties with the Murray clan after Claire’s return.

Having Fergus and Marsali nearby will allow Claire and Jamie to trust more people. They can take a step back from the adventure and enjoy their time together, allowing others to do some of the more dangerous work; and Fergus and Marsali would totally step up to the challenges.

More Fergus and Young Ian

That bond between Fergus and Young Ian was excellent. The two show the beauty of growing up together, despite the more than a decade age gap. Since Young Ian was captured, that friendship (and almost brotherhood) hasn’t been seen. It’s time to bring that back.

Having Fergus in the Colonies with Young Ian allows for that. Not just that, but seeing them manage the devastation of the shipwreck and not knowing about Claire and Jamie initially will also help solidify that relationship.
