Claire and Jamie are separated again in Outlander Season 3, Episode 10 and they will do anything to find their ways back to each other.

Jamie goes into Outlander Season 3, Episode 10 furious that Captain Raines has allowed the Porpoise to set sail with Claire. Not only that but Raines refuses to follow at speed, understandably choosing to put the lives of the many crewmen onboard first. Meanwhile, Claire has her work cut out for her to find the source of the infection and stop the multiple daily deaths.

Jamie is retrained

“Heaven & Earth” opens with Jamie seeing the Porpoise (the British ship full of sick) sailing away at full speed. Captain Raines got a message that the Porpoise was choosing to get to land as soon as possible, with Claire onboard. He wasn’t going to say no to the British Navy, but Jamie has other ideas. To keep his men safe, Raines chooses to restrain Jamie.

All Jamie can do is convince Fergus to help him escape. They can plot mutiny, although the idea of seven of Jamie’s men against 20 crewmen appears a little ambitious and Fergus can’t help but point out that logic. Using the idea of love against Fergus, Jamie convinces his foster son to help him escape using his former pick pocketing skills.

Fergus has to weigh up the odds, with Marsali’s help. He chooses to help Jamie, but soon backs out of that decision. The crew wouldn’t mind if Jamie and Fergus were killed, leaving Marsali at the mercy of the men. He isn’t going to risk the virtue and life of the woman he loves, nor the life of the man he views as a father.

Of course, Jamie isn’t happy with that decision but he does understand. When he thinks it’s all over, Marsali is the one that comes to Jamie’s rescue. She convinces Raines that he will need all able-bodied men to help navigate the upcoming coastline, which includes Jamie. As long as Jamie gives his word that he won’t try anything stupid, Raines will free him and put him to work. Marsali also knows that Fergus didn’t refuse to help because of herself, but because of her love for Jamie.

Once he’s released, he finally gives his blessing to Fergus and Marsali. They can marry in Jamaica.

Claire learns the source of the disease

Most of Outlander Season 3, Episode 10 was focused on Claire’s storyline. While tending to the sick, she knows she needs to figure out where the source of the disease is coming from. After looking through the books, there’s only one from the initial outbreak in the Carpenter’s Quarters who didn’t catch the sickness and he now works within the galley. That means the source of the disease is handling the food and it’s no wonder so many people are still getting sick.

With the young galley hand placed under arrest to keep the ship safe, Claire gets to work to make sure everyone follows the strict protocols to prevent contamination. That includes releasing two Edinburgh smuggler prisoners so they can turn the rum into pure alcohol. It all seems to work well, until Mrs. Johansson’s (the goat keeper) husband falls ill. He isn’t sick with the illness, but from alcohol poisoning after drinking the pure alcohol.

Saving the husband does help Claire and Mrs. Johansson form a friendship, which is useful later. Claire learns that someone onboard has worked out that Jamie Fraser is Alexander Malcolm, the man who isn’t just wanted for treason but also murder. Claire needs to get a message to Jamie, while finding the source of the information. It’s none other than the man who had found the pamphlets in Jamie’s print shop.

Mrs. Johansson has a way of getting Claire off the ship to warn Jamie. Her goats will need grass, which means she can escape when they get onto land. However, the Porpoise’s captain is doing the rounds and finds her before she can get away. He knows that she wants to warn Jamie, but he needs to let the authorities know about Jamie when they get to Jamaica. Not only would it be illegal to not give over the information, but it would go against his oath to His Majesty’s service.

When the outbreak of typhoid dissipates, Claire feels like she can catch one small break. Unfortunately, the last death of the disease is her young helper, the 14-year-old Mr. Elias Pound. After burying him at sea and the failed attempt to escape, she initially thinks it’s all over for Jamie and her.

Mrs. Johansson has another plan, though. Claire can jump overboard and swim to land not too far away. Claire isn’t initially sure about the idea, but what choice does she have? Mrs. Johansson gives Claire some money, helps set up a small raft and Claire takes that leap of faith in hope that she can save Jamie from certain death.
