Claire has always tried to use her knowledge of modern medicine to help prevent the spread of infection in the 18th century. In Outlander Season 3, Episode 10 she is going to have her work cut out for her.

There’s no point wasting good grog, right? That’s what young Elias Pound believes, as he leaves the sick bay onboard the ship in Outlander Season 3, Episode 10. It’s an understandable view for a ship that is running low on supplies with the unknown-typhoid fever spreading, but Claire realizes that she is going to have her work cut out for her trying to prevent the spread of infection.

In the second sneak peak for “Heaven & Earth,” Claire attempts to bring more air into the area below deck where the sick are being held. She’s also arranged for a barrel of grog to remain below deck, since she doesn’t have access to pure alcohol. Mr. Pound understandably doesn’t know anything about modern medicine and containing contamination, so licks his hands after dipping his hands in the grog.

Poor Claire attempts not to get angry with him, while explaining the severity of the situation. It’s got to be hard, but she has to understand that the medical knowledge isn’t great.

It will be interesting to see where this clip appears in the episode. The promo shows that she’s figured the cook is likely a carrier of the disease. This could be the first clue given of how Claire comes to that conclusion, since she mentions touching food.
