25 Days of MacBree-mas Day 11: Which big reunion was the best?
Outlander Season 4 saw two big Brianna/Roger reunions. Which one was the best? I look into this for Day 11 of the 25 Days of MacBree-mas.
Outlander Season 4 saw Roger and Brianna reunite twice in the past. They were both big moments, with large buildups and a lot said and unsaid afterward. Which of those two reunions was the best?
In a way, it’s unfair to judge them both opposite each other. After all, they were under different circumstances. The first reunion took place in Episode 8, “Wilmington.” While Claire and Jamie were at the theater, Roger finally found Brianna. The two had a beautiful moment, as they were handfasted and consummated that relationship.

The second reunion was in Episode 13 when Roger returned to Brianna after months after thanks to the actions of Jamie and Ian. Roger had been sold to the Mohawks and had to be retrieved, but he learned that Brianna was pregnant with a baby that was possibly Bonnet’s. Jamie and Claire returned without Roger, making Brianna fear that he could never accept her child as his own.
Both reunions had different outcomes. The first would see Brianna and Roger separated again after another argument. Brianna’s fiery personality prevented her from realizing that Roger had tried to tell her about the newspaper article onto to find out that she was gone. Roger’s hurt pride and own anger led to him walking away instead of allowing Bree to cool off.
The second reunion didn’t have time to lead to anything. Roger had the chance to tell Brianna that he would be the only father the child would know, that he would claim this child as their own. That reunion was cut short with the arrival of the redcoats.
And I don’t fault the writers. From a TV viewer point of view, I enjoyed the way Outlander Season 4 ended. It felt more like a TV show than just a straight book adaptation, and that’s something I personally enjoy. But it means I can’t fairly compare the two reunions. There was just so much unsaid in the second one.
If I genuinely had to choose one of the reunions, I would have to go with the first one. Both were able to be honest with each other. Brianna could allow her feelings for Roger truly show, agreeing to marry him despite originally saying she wouldn’t. Roger was able to show Brianna just how much he loved her and was willing to go through the old Scottish custom of handfasting, even if it wasn’t traditional for him, to make it work.
This reunion led to everything that would come later. It led to the pregnancy (we know that Jemmy is Roger’s now) and it led to the second reunion. So, I guess, it really does have to be the first.
