Day 2 in the 25 Days of MacBree-mas is all about Roger’s worries in Outlander Season 5. It’s not about Jemmy but his own fears at his wedding.
Our Christmas countdown officially begins with a look at Roger’s worries in Outlander Season 5. Let’s delve into the 25 Days of MacBree-mas right away.
If you haven’t read “The Fiery Cross,” I will warn you of the spoilers in this post. There’s a lot that comes up in the first part of the book that will be discussed here. The content also comes from the Entertainment Weekly post when the exclusive image from the wedding was released.
It’s easy to assume that Roger will be concerned about Jemmy. Right now, there’s no need to worry that Stephen Bonnet will return, as everyone believes him to be dead, but there will be that to be concerned about in the future. However, there’s something else Roger fears and worries first.

In the lead up to his wedding, there’s a lot working against him. He’s a man of nothing in the 18th century. Nobody knows of him. While he uses the surname MacKenzie, it’s not like he’s just welcomed into Jocasta’s life with open arms. She doesn’t know him, and anyone could claim to be a MacKenzie.
Naturally, Jocasta is concerned that he is purely after money. Brianna is set to inherit River Run and Jocasta wants to ensure that it goes to the right person. Should Roger outlive Brianna, Jocasta needs to make plans for that.
This just continues this fear that Roger isn’t worthy of Brianna. It’s not like he can do much for her in the 18th century. He’s not a farmer and he’s not good with his hands. Roger is a scholar, a historian more specifically. Yet, his knowledge of history is actually about things to come in the 18th century. There’s not much that he can do with his knowledge in the time period.
Roger has this idea that he will need to protect and provide for Brianna. Even as a man of the 1970s, he believes that he should be the one to protect his fair maiden. That’s especially the case in the 18th century when women were the property of their fathers or their husbands. Brianna may definitely not be a woman of the period (she is from the 20th century, after all) but society expects Roger to look after her, to protect her.
This is a man who doesn’t fit in. He can’t ride a horse well, although we’ve seen him ride a horse well enough to get back to Brianna at the end of Season 4. He doesn’t know how to wield a sword or shoot a rifle. Brianna will need to teach him a lot, and it’s not surprising that Jamie doesn’t think too much of Roger because of this. Others won’t either.
At least Jamie knows that Roger was raised in a different time. He was raised in a way that he would be able to provide for Brianna if they went back to the 20th century. Is it really that surprising that there are times he wants to go back?
