There was one fate in the balance at the end of Outlander Season 4. Did Stephen Bonnet get out of jail before it exploded?

Stephen Bonnet found himself in chains at the end of Outlander Season 4. We know how the story goes in the books, but the storyline was adapted slightly for the TV show. Would this mean Bonnet’s storyline would change?

Entertainment Weekly released images from the fourth season, with some details of the events that are to come. Some of the events surround Roger and Brianna, which led to a mention of Bonnet’s fate in Season 5.

More from Spoilers

The last we saw of Stephen Bonnet was him trying to reach the keys that had been dropped before the jail exploded. We didn’t see him get out, but we also didn’t see his body afterward. We were left wondering whether the writers would change his fate.

Well, it turns out a change of fate is not on the cards. Sophie Skelton explains that Brianna learns Bonnet got out of the jail alive. Knowing her rapist is running around North Carolina is going to be hard. After all, that pain is still there. She already has a constant reminder through Jemmy (she’s sure at this point that Jem is Bonnet’s biological son) and now she knows that Bonnet is out there.

Bonnet being alive could cause some serious complications. He could come to claim Brianna for his own, and there would be very little Roger and Jamie could do about it. This was the way of the time, and often men would arrange for their daughters to marry their rapists to avoid shame from the rape.

More than that, the rape will play out in her head. It will affect her relationship with Roger, especially her physical one. It’s not that she blames him or views him as Bonnet, but she’ll be scared of the physical touches. Knowing Bonnet is still out there will prolonge that fear.

The good news for book readers is that this part of the novels isn’t changing. Stephen Bonnet is still out there and will likely return.
