Of course, if you don’t want to know, then this isn’t somewhere you should be! I recommend checking out this post on the best Roger moments from Season 4 instead. You’re only here if you want to know exactly what happens.
While life starts out on Fraser’s Ridge fairly well for the new parents, things don’t go without a hitch. This is Diana Gabaldon, after all. Claire and Jamie haven’t been able to live together without trouble since the beginning so why would anyone expect any different for Roger and Brianna!
What happens to Roger?
During “The Fiery Cross,” The Battle of Alamance takes place. This is when Roger steps over enemy lines in an attempt to reason with one of Jamie’s Quaker friends, Hermann Husband. It works, and Hermann talks with the Regulators to find a non-violent way to deal with the current situation.
It’s on the way back home that Roger encounters Morag MacKenzie, the same Morag MacKenzie he met on the ship on the way to the Colonies in “Drums of Autumn” (and Outlander Season 4). Due to the fact that they are relations, Roger gives Morag a platonic kiss on the cheek, but Morag’s husband sees it and is immediately suspicious and jealous.
Morag’s husband, Buck, turns Roger over to the North Carolina Provincial Militia, claiming that Roger is one of the Regulators. The militia wastes no time in hanging the suspected Regulator.
Is Roger saved?
Fortunately, Claire, Jamie, and Brianna learn about what’s happened and head out to save Roger. They get to him when he’s close to death. In fact, he’s hanged for the best part of an hour by the time the Frasers and Brianna get to him, and his voicebox is permanently damaged after.
It’s going to be interesting to see how the show plays this out. Will it be the hour? Will the show opt to cut the time down (honestly, I did feel taken out of the story by finding out he was hanged for an hour and no brain damage at all)? How will Roger react afterward?
This moment is extremely important for Roger moving forward. It completely changes who he is, as he needs to find a new identity that doesn’t involve his singing. What will he do in the past without much to work with?
