Outlander Season 5: What are Claire and Brianna so horrified about in the promo photo?

Claire and Brianna look horrified at something in the Outlander Season 5 promo photo. I look into what that could be, using book spoilers to help.

When STARZ announced Outlander Season 5 would premiere in February 2020, it was with a promo photo from the season. That promo photo has immediately raised questions. While Jamie has a concerned look on his face, Brianna and Claire are horrified. What could they be looking at?

We can use “The Fiery Cross” to get some sort of idea of what they’re looking at. If you haven’t read the books, there will be some spoilers in this post.

The two are looking up at something. We know there are some horrifying moments in the fifth book, but one that involves looking up at something would be involving Roger. This could certainly explain why Roger is (yet again) missing from promo photos.

One of the scenes coming up involves Roger being hanged for a crime he didn’t commit. He’s wrongfully accused and it’s all linked to a certain ancestor of his. Fortunately, he’s saved in time before he’s killed, which could certainly be something Brianna and Claire are looking up at.

In the novel, Roger is hanged for a period of time. It’s possible that the Frasers get to him while he’s still there, and they’ll be scared that he’s dead. After all, Brianna is clinging to her mother, suggesting that this is something that would directly affect her rather than just being horrified at the world of the 18th century.

Alternatively, the promo shot could involve another storyline. We know that there will be some “reasonable invention” for the story. Could this involve something about the Regulators or the Redcoats?
