How can Jamie see Brianna in his dreams in Outlander?

In Outlander Season 4, Jamie revealed that he’d seen Brianna in his dreams. It turns out that it was definitely Brianna but how is that possible?

During Outlander Season 4, Jamie asked Claire a strange question about a birthmark on Brianna. He’d seen the mark in a dream, but it was soon clear that this had to be more than a dream. Somehow, Jamie had seen his daughter.

We all know that Jamie can’t time travel. He doesn’t have the gene necessary, but somehow, he was able to travel to see Brianna. It’s worth noting that he probably didn’t actually travel through time during this instance as Brianna was already in the 18th century, but in the novels, he does manage to see her in a different time period. And I say probably because the timelines aren’t always clear. However, during the same episode, Adawehi tells Claire that Brianna is “here.”

So, how is it possible? Well, Jamie isn’t able to travel through the stones, but he is able to do a form of travel. He can astral travel through his dreams.

In Outlander Season 4, the mention of Brianna’s birthmark is the first time we really get this notion of Jamie astral traveling. We don’t see it happening, but there’s enough detail to get the gist of what’s happening.

In the novels, there are a few other mentions, and there’s a little more explanation of what’s going on. Since most of the traveling is in later books, it shouldn’t be too surprising if the show eventually brings those moments in.

This ability to astral travel could end up answering the question of how Jamie is outside Claire’s window in 1945. There have been rumors that this is Jamie around the time of Culloden. It’s possible that while he’s unconscious on the battlefield, he astral traveled to see Claire brushing her hair. Because he was unconscious or due to the circumstance, he may not have even realized what he was seeing.
