Outlander lands five Saturn Awards 2019 nominations
Outlander has gained five nominations in the 2019 Saturn Awards. Here’s a look at each of the nominations and who they’re up against.
While we’re waiting for the Emmy nomination announcements, we can’t forget about the Saturn Awards 2019. The nominations for the Sci-Fi, Fantasy, and Horror awards show were announced on July 15, and Outlander gained five nominations.
It’s not surprising to learn that the series was nominated for Best Fantasy Television Series. Outlander is often hard to categorize because of the fantasy, romance, and historical element to it. For the Saturn Awards, it’s clearly classed as fantasy. Personally, I class it as Historical Fantasy, so I can get behind the Fantasy classification for the awards.

The show does have some stiff competition. It’s up against fellow STARZ series, American Gods, as well as The CW’s Charmed, Hallmark Channel’s The Good Witch, and The CW’s The Outpost. However, I think the strongest competition in the category comes from SYFY’s The Magicians and HBO’s Game of Thrones.
Sam Heughan has been nominated for Best Actor on a Television Series in the 2019 Saturn Awards. He goes up against The Orville’s Seth MacFarlane, The Sinner’s Bill Pullman, and Westworld’s Jeffrey Wright. I think the strongest competition will come from The Walking Dead’s Andrew Lincoln, The Flash’s Grant Gustin, and Game of Thrones’ Kit Harington.
Caitriona Balfe has been nominated for Best Actress on a Television Series. Like her co-star, she does have some stiff competition. Doctor Who’s Jodie Whittaker, The Flash’s Candice Patton, The Orville’s Adrianne Palicki, and Supergirl’s Melissa Benoist are also nominated. However, I think the stiffest competition will come from Killing Eve’s Sandra Oh and Game of Thrones Emilia Clarke.
Unfortunately, Richard Rankin wasn’t nominated (although after that performance in “Providence” I think he should have been) but Sophie Skelton did land a Best Supporting Actress on a Television Series nomination. She’s up against some big names, including Gwendoline Christie, Lena Headey, and Sophie Turner from Game of Thrones, Danai Gurira and Melissa McBride from The Walking Dead and Rhea Seehorn from Better Call Saul.
The fifth and last nomination is for Best Guest Starring Performance on a Television Series, and it’s Ed Speleers who lands that Saturn Awards 2019 nomination. He’s up against Sydney Lemmon and Tonya Pinkins from Fear the Walking Dead, Jeffrey Dean Morgan from The Walking Dead, Jon Cryer from Supergirl and Rainer Bock from Better Call Saul.
Whether the actors or the show wins is up for debate. I’d love to see all walk away with their awards, but, as I stated, there is some stiff competition. It’s not really about the wins right now, though. Just being nominated is an achievement and excellent promotion for the series.
The Saturn Awards winners will be announced on Sept. 13. We’ll be back later with news about the Emmy nominations.
