Could Outlander Season 5 include Frank’s letter from Drums of Autumn?
Drums of Autumn ended with a letter from Frank. Would it make sense to include it in Outlander Season 5?
Caution: There are spoilers in this post about the ending to “Drums of Autumn” and for storylines in “Dragonfly in Amber.” This is a warning for those who haven’t read that far.
Recently, I shared storylines from “Drums of Autumn” that could be in Outlander Season 5. One of those was the letter from Frank. However, it’s more than likely that the actual letter can’t be included.

When considering “Dragonfly in Amber” and Outlander Season 2, it’s clear that certain things changed that make Frank’s letter difficult to keep in. Of course, the letter could (and probably will) be changed, but the letter from “Drums of Autumn” wouldn’t make sense.
It goes back to Season 2 and to the grave Claire went to in Scotland. Rather than going to Jamie’s grave, she went to the Fraser headstone at Culloden. There, she told “Jamie” all about Brianna and how angry she was when Jamie sent her to Frank. However, in “Dragonfly in Amber” that’s not the case.
Instead, Claire finds Jamie’s “actual” gravestone. She heads there, which is how Brianna actually finds out about Jamie being her father. It turns out the gravestone isn’t real and Frank arranged for it to be placed in the church to make Claire believe that Jamie was dead. The letter in “Drums of Autumn” explains all.
With the storyline in Season 2 changed, it does mean the letter would need to be adapted. Mentioning Jamie’s “grave” now wouldn’t make all that much sense to those who haven’t read the books. Nor would it make a lot of sense to those who have in the storyline of the TV series.
This doesn’t mean a letter from Frank can’t be included somehow. There’s certainly the chance that Roger found a letter from Frank. Maybe it’s some sort of admittance that Frank knew Jamie was alive or even that he found evidence Claire eventually returned to Jamie. Taking Brianna to England could have been Frank’s way of offering Claire the chance to go back in time without guilt.
We’ll have to wait and see. However, I suspect if the letter is used in Outlander Season 5, there won’t be a mention of Jamie’s “grave.”
Do you think the writers should include Jamie’s “grave” and Frank’s letter in some way? Is there a way to include it all without confusion? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
