Outlander: Why book-to-screen adaptations will never be perfect
There will always be complaints about a book-to-screen adaptation. Nothing will ever be perfect, whether it’s Outlander, Harry Potter, and more, and here’s exactly why.
Book-to-screen adaptations are never going to be perfect. There’s always going to be something that fans of the original content don’t like. This has been noticed with Outlander from the very beginning. Here’s why the adaptations will never be perfect.
This has nothing to do with the writing of the adaptation. Well, okay, in a way it does but it’s not about missing scenes, the time limitations, or even budget restraints. It’s all about the imagination.

Books involve our own imaginations. The Outlander novels, for example, are so big that it’s easy to understand that everyone has different elements that stand out the more. For example, some will connect more with Claire and Jamie, others connect with Brianna and Roger, and then there are other characters at later moments.
Then there’s the fact that we’ll imagine something different from the descriptions. For some, the characters may match the Jamie and Claire that we end up in the show. Others will see someone completely different.
This applies to the writers’ imaginations. They’ll find something that stands out to them in the novels and those elements don’t necessarily stand out for the fans. The showrunners and actors may notice something different about the characters that book fans haven’t.
This doesn’t mean anyone is right or wrong in the things they’ve spotted. It just means that content is so diverse and there’s something for everyone.
I’ll be the first to admit I don’t tend to pick out the same elements as everyone else. So, it’s not surprising that the writers don’t or that other fans pick out something different. With so many different opinions and standout moments, book-to-screen adaptations will never be perfect.
