Outlander Season 4 struggled to fit everything in and one of the things missing was Brianna and Marsali bonding. Should this have been included or is it best saved for Season 5?
“Drums of Autumn” is certainly a large book and it’s not surprising some of the smaller elements of it were skipped over. One of the smaller elements was Brianna and Marsali bonding. Is this something that Outlander Season 4 should have included or is it best saving it for Season 5?
I won’t include too many major spoilers for the novel for those who haven’t read it yet. However, there are some minor spoilers to set scenes.

One thing I looked forward to was seeing Marsali and Brianna meeting, especially after seeing Brianna and Laoghaire interacting. I would have loved for Brianna to find out that Marsali was Laoghaire’s daughter and Joanie’s sister, bonding over some of the events that happened at Laoghaire’s house. However, I do admit that there just wasn’t time for this.
Outlander Season 4 only had 13 episodes. Had the show had a couple of more episodes it would have made sense to include some sort of bonding between the two sisters-in-law (Fergus is adopted and, in my eyes, that makes Brianna and Fergus brother and sister). However, the setup of the season didn’t allow it to happen.
In “Drums of Autumn,” Marsali and Fergus are living on the Ridge when Brianna gets there. That wasn’t the case in the series, keeping Fergus and Marsali in Wilmington until the very end. The bonding that took place in the book was on the Ridge, so really, this something that should wait until the fifth season.
We did get a lot of bonding in a short space of time. I would have loved for Brianna to have made it to the Ridge sooner, allowing for more time on this part of the storyline. However, considering there are two more seasons, it makes sense to spread out the storylines and give more breathing room to larger parts of the story.
Hopefully, we’ll see some bonding between Marsali and Brianna. One thing I’ve missed is Claire’s friendship with Geillis and some of the female interactions. It would be good to get that between Brianna and Marsali instead moving forward, especially now that they both are young mothers.
