Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan have gained producer credits for Outlander Season 5. What will this mean for the future of the series?

Last week, fans learned that Outlander Season 5 had gained two new producers. Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan have been bumped up to producers for the fifth season. While it’s exciting, many now want to know what it means for the future of the series.

In short, nothing is going to really change. We’ll still get to see Balfe and Heughan on our screens. Two main stars getting boosted to producers doesn’t affect their screen time, so there’s no need to worry about that for those concerned about a lack of Claire and Jamie.

More from Opinion

Outlander Season 5 is the point where a lot of the individual storylines start to combine. Everyone is now at Fraser’s Ridge, which means it’s all about the characters as a family unit moving forward. Balfe and Heughan becoming producers won’t affect that.

The boost of their stature on the show is a good thing. They get more of a say in the direction of their characters. Their input is considered more and they get the chance to agree or disagree with a current storyline or direction for their characters.

One thing to keep in mind is that they’re producers and not executive producers. They’re not the showrunners either. There are people above them who will make the final decisions, but being producers gives them more of a voice. If they think the writing or the show is off point for their characters (or even for other characters and the overall book storyline).
