Would Lord John Grey help Jamie deal with Governor Tryon?
Outlander Season 4 ended with the cliffhanger of Jamie being ordered to form a militia. Could Lord John Grey help him get out of this sticky situation in Outlander Season 5?
During the fourth season finale, Jamie got an order from Governor Tryon. Not only was he to create a militia (a small inconvenience) but he was also to capture and kill Murtagh (a major problem). Could Lord John Grey be the one to help smooth over this situation in Outlander Season 5?
Jamie and Lord John certainly have a special bond. They have come to each other’s defense when necessary — John’s to Jamie’s more times than the other. This bond between them is relatively unbreakable (for now) and John would do anything to keep his friend and former prisoner safe.

But this may be completely out of John’s wheelhouse. There’s no way that he could go up against Governor Tryon without some serious consequences. This isn’t the same as talking down a Navy acting captain as he did in the third season finale.
Plus, Lord John Grey isn’t even in the same colony. He’s headed out to Virginia, while Jamie and Claire remain in North Carolina.
There is a way around it. Lord John Grey could potentially offer a safe haven to Murtagh in Virginia. Would a militia even think of looking there? Governor Tryon doesn’t seem to know the familial connection between Jamie and Murtagh yet and wouldn’t assume John Grey would offer safety to the leader of the Regulators.
While that could be possible, Lord John hasn’t shown any sympathy for the Regulator cause. He doesn’t realize just how disenfranchised the Scottish and other European people have become because of the taxes from Britain. None of them really did until it was too late. And while John has sympathy for Jamie, he’s never really felt that for Murtagh.
Sure, he made sure Murtagh got a doctor in Ardsmuir but that was more to deepen the bond with Jamie. Plus, that wouldn’t lead to John being reprimanded and possibly branded a traitor, which would happen if he gave safe haven to Murtagh now. John has Willie to think about.
So, while Lord John could theoretically help Jamie, there’s nothing he will do at this moment in time. Jamie will have to figure out another way to keep his godfather safe.
