There are many Outlander theories. One floating around right now is that Murtagh is Jamie’s biological father. That’s most definitely not the case and here’s why!
I’m not even sure why this is a popular theory right now, but some fans are asking whether Murtagh could be Jamie’s biological father. Out of all the Outlander theories, this is the easiest to debunk. There’s no way that Murtagh could be Jamie’s father — he’s just his godfather.
The theory began shortly after Jocasta told Brianna about Ellen’s pregnancy before wedlock. That seemed to immediately lead to fans suggesting that Ellen MacKenzie Fraser had an affair with Murtagh before her marriage to Brian, leading to her baby being Murtagh’s. And that somehow makes Murtagh Jamie’s biological father.

Let me debunk this immediately just from facts we know from the Outlander series:
- Ellen loved Brian and eloped with him
- She stayed away from her brothers until she was visibly pregnant to make sure her brothers acknowledged the handfasting
- While Murtagh loved Ellen, there was never the hint that she returned those feelings; it was all about Brian
- Jamie wasn’t Ellen’s eldest child, but her third child
So, even if the first baby was Murtagh’s by some strange twist, that baby wasn’t Jamie. Willie and Jenny both came before Jamie and there is no way that Ellen would have had an affair — there’s never been any hint Jamie’s parents were unfaithful to each other.
And if you don’t want to take my word for it, why not take the author of the book’s word. Diana Gabaldon has answers questions about this craziest of Outlander theories.
If Diana says it isn’t so, it isn’t so. It really is as simple as that. Even the show writers couldn’t change this.
