5. Providence

Let’s start with one of the episodes for the most recent season. This is also the most heartbreaking episodes of all on this list. When you need a good cry, Outlander Season 4, Episode 12 is certainly the place to turn for the end.

“Providence” is a Brianna and Roger-heavy episode, with just a few seconds of Claire and Jamie while Jamie’s voiceover is used to read the letter. That doesn’t take away from the beauty of the episode, though. In fact, this is a necessary episode to develop the two characters, as well as bring Fergus and Marsali more into focus.

More from Opinion

As Brianna’s due date comes closer, she now has a fiance in Lord John Grey. Well, sort of. He has no intention of actually marrying her and is giving her time for Roger to return to her. He believes that Claire and Jamie will bring Roger back.

Meanwhile, Roger is a slave in the Mohawk village, where he meets a prisoner, Father Alexander, a French priest. The two form a connection in the short time they’re together, while Roger figures out what he’s going to do next. Previously vowing to find his way back to Brianna, he’s now decided to put himself first but is that really something he can do?

And then there’s Fergus, who feels guilty for Murtagh being imprisoned, knowing it’s an immediate death sentence. With Marsali by his side, he’ll save Murtagh from certain death.
