Was Bonnet making amends with the gem on Outlander?
During the Outlander Season 4 penultimate episode, Bonnet gave Brianna a gem. Was this a way of attempting to make amends?
Outlander Season 4, Episode 12 saw Brianna face her rapist. She threw a few truths about how he’ll be forgotten and that led to a change in his demeanor. In that moment, he gave her a gem. Was this an attempt to make some amends?
As he handed over the gem, Brianna refused to take it. That led to Bonnet mentioning that it was maintenance for the child. The gem wouldn’t go too far, but it was a token offer. It’s not like Bonnet believe he could offer much more considering he thought he would hang (yes, I’m 100% sure Bonnet got away without even knowing the book storyline).

There was a slight look that suggested he felt some sort of guilt or shame. I don’t think that was the case. I’m sure the look was more of Bonnet realizing he wouldn’t get to see this child of his, that he wouldn’t be remembered.
When it comes to most of us, we’re remembered when we die. There is someone who will mourn for us and there’s a sense of comfort in that. Bonnet doesn’t have that. He’s made so many enemies and no friends, but he’d hoped that Brianna and their potential child would remember him. However, Brianna made it clear that the child would never get to know about him, nobody would think of him.
The gem wasn’t really a way to make amends. It wasn’t a way to do right by the child. It was just a way to do one good thing before his impending death, believing there was no way out this time.
