How did Fergus and Lord John Grey know each other on Outlander?

When Lord John Grey looked at the man holding the pistol at him on Outlander Season 4, Episode 12, he recognized Fergus. How could Lord John Grey know the Frenchman? It’s a question many are pondering.

During Murtagh’s jailbreak in Outlander Season 4, Episode 12, Fergus held a pistol at Lord John Grey. Upon turning around, John immediately knew who it was. In fact, both knew each other. How could that be possible when we’d never seen them in scenes together before?

No, it wasn’t bad writing or a continuity issue. It all goes back to some off-screen action way back in Season 3.

In the Season 3 finale, Fergus read a letter from Claire after Jamie had been arrested. It told him and Marsali what had happened so Fergus could take steps to help Jamie. What did Fergus do? Well, what else could he do? He went straight to the Governor of Jamaica.

Fergus would have seen Lord John at the party. He would have known about Jamie’s friendship with him. Fergus even said that he would go to John to help get Jamie out of trouble. So, the two would have met off-screen.

John doesn’t forget a face and even if he did, hearing Fergus’ accent would have helped place him. Considering the situation, it was just worked for John to recognize Fergus and then be shocked to see that Fergus had orchestrated a jailbreak.

Sometimes events have to happen off-screen. There isn’t enough time to fit in every single meeting and seeing Fergus and John meet wasn’t necessary in Season 3. However, we do know that it happened so it made sense that Fergus and John would know each other now.
