Can the Outlander writers and producers ever win with Sassenachs?
There’s one thing I’m learning for certain when it comes to Sassenachs. Some will never be truly happy with what the Outlander production team is doing.
Can the Outlander production team ever win with the fandom? It’s something I’m asking myself at the moment when I read some comments. It seems like there is always something to complain about and sometimes I just don’t understand it.
Now, don’t get me wrong. There are elements of the episodes that I don’t like. I don’t always agree with dialogue choices or even why the showrunners decide to use certain music in episodes, but that’s due to personal choice. However, there is always something to love about the episodes.

One thing I don’t ever mind is changes to the book. Yet, I know others do. People want to see their favorite moments in the stories transformed on screen and it’s not always possible.
I do get why there are some complaints about the book changes. Some people have read the books since they were first released almost 30 years ago. This is a huge world and it can feel like a lot is missing when transformed to screen.
But sometimes it’s like the writers can’t win. In recent episodes, I’ve seen some complaints about the dialogue, yet the dialogue has been taken straight from the books. So, people want it to be like the books but when it is, there are complaints.
Maybe the complaints aren’t from the same fans, but it’s still clear that Sassenachs are so diverse that the production team can’t make everyone happy. With book-first and show-first/show-only fans, it’s going to be impossible to make everybody happy.
It’s no wonder that sometimes it feels like the showrunners are doing what they want and not listening to feedback. Considering the mixed opinions from the fanbase, it’s not surprising the production team will do what they feel is right for them. They can’t win anyway, so why not do what they love to do?
