STARZ made it clear in the synopsis for Outlander Season 4, Episode 9 that the most anticipated meeting is happening this week. Is it a little short-sighted of the series or perfect for viewers?

The most highly-anticipated meeting in Outlander Season 4 is happening this Sunday. STARZ made that clear in the synopsis. There’s no avoiding the spoilers, especially with the publications putting the announcement in the title of one of their posts.

Is this a little short-sighted? Does it ruin the surprise? Or is it just good marketing?

More from Opinion

Well, for those who don’t read the books, it has ruined it. It can be hard to avoid the spoilers but many people have. I see so many in the Facebook groups asking questions about what’s to come because they simply have no idea. And I do think it’s great. We get a chance to see how people are finding out about the world of Outlander.

So, to find out that the big meeting is happening in the episode — and who is meeting — is disappointing for them.

But there are so many people who have read the books or know the spoilers. Knowing this meeting is happening isn’t a surprise, so finding out that it’s happening this week isn’t a big deal.

But the marketing is perfect for the current situation. We saw that Sunday’s episode took a dip in the live ratings. This may have been anticipated since it was the night before Christmas Eve, but STARZ may be worried that there would be another dip this week. So, why not make it clear that one of the most anticipated moments of the season is happening.

Those who have read the books, which still likely remains the majority of viewers, will know that Brianna will finally get to see her parents. They know it’s the big episode they’ve been waiting for.

It’s not the first time STARZ has ruined the surprise of a reunion. Outlander Season 4 saw Lord John Grey promoted for his episode a couple of weeks ago. Last year, we knew the reunion between Claire and Jamie was happening before it did. This type of marketing encourages people to tune in live because they have this need to see it all play out immediately.

Usually, I’d say something like this should have been kept a surprise, but this series is very different to most other shows. Most of the viewers are readers of the books or they’ve checked out the spoilers. Knowing Brianna and Jamie meet at some point isn’t that surprising at all.
