Brianna and Roger are on opposite sides of an argument again. It makes you wonder whether Roger can do anything right on Outlander.

Poor, Roger. My heart goes out to this guy. Once again, Outlander delivered an episode with Roger and Brianna getting back together only to break up again. And there’s no real fault on either side.

Both had their reasons for their actions and both have their reasons for their decisions. I get why Roger made the decision he did, but I do have to wonder if, in Brianna’s eyes, he’ll ever be able to do anything right.

More from Opinion

When he called her a child, he was a little out of line, but I get why he saw her as one. She didn’t stop for a minute to understand Roger’s point of view. His decision to keep the obituary a secret did make sense in a way. What was the point in telling Brianna the truth? Should they really use their knowledge to change the past?

After all, Brianna and Roger already know that Claire was in the past during Culloden. I’m not sure how much Claire told them in the series (the books are different and this is all about the series), but it would be easy to assume that she told them she tried to change Culloden’s outcome and it didn’t work. So, why would Brianna think this would be different?

Of course, she had to try. But Roger has his understandable views about playing God.

And yet, he did end up deciding to tell her. By that point, she was already gone.

This argument has led to the two breaking up again. It then led to Brianna being raped by Bonnet. Now, I in no way blame Roger for what happened to Brianna. That was all Stephen Bonnet’s fault (and the men playing cards who refused to help), but had they not broken up — had Brianna not pretty much told him to go back to his own time — things would have been vastly different.

It makes you wonder whether Roger can do anything right, though. He did bring the argument onto himself by mentioning the printer without thinking more carefully. Yet, he tried to do a good thing and it was thrown back in his face once more.

Is there any hope for the two of them in the TV series? That’s something we’ll have to wait to find out. Fortunately, there’s no break this week and we’ll get more Outlander before the new year.
