John Qunicy Myers was brilliantly introduced in Outlander Season 4, Episode 2. His story continues in Episode 3, but will it be different to the novels?

Outlander Season 4, Episode 2 brilliantly introduced John Quincy Myers to the fans. Whether you already knew about him from the books or only just met him from the show, using the skunk as a method of introduction was priceless and hilarious. However, with the storyline from the episode and the development in the Episode 3 promo, there are questions about his future storyline.

It looks like the writers have taken liberties with the novel’s storyline again. This isn’t that surprising, as the writers need to adapt based on time and cost constraints. They also want to make things slightly different to keep the book readers guessing.

I shouldn’t need to say this, but I will just in case. There are spoilers from the books in this post.

More from Spoilers

In the novels, things with the slave at the plantation work out very differently. He’s never brought to the house and Claire doesn’t heal him and fight to keep him alive. Instead, there’s another slave that she grows connected to, Pollyanne. The Fraser help her escape in the hope she’ll be adopted by one of the Native tribes.

This is where John Quincy comes into play. He knows the Frasers are getting this slave out but doesn’t turn them over to the authorities. Instead, he helps them out west to get her out and from there, he and Pollyanne form a mutual attraction.

It’s a beautiful story but it’s impossible to see how that is going to happen in Outlander Season 4. Pollyanne hasn’t been introduced and the Frasers are heading away from River Run in the next episode. In fact, John Quincy is helping them in the trailer.

The medical condition changed too!

And let’s not overlook the introduction was also changed. John Quincy didn’t meet the Frasers at River Run in “Drums of Autumn.” They all met at Wilmington, where Claire diagnosed him with an inguinal hernia. He later turns up at River Run drunk and demands that she performs the surgery on him.

He is the one that Claire performs surgery on in the plantation house, with party guests all around her. It’s a chance for everyone to see her medical skills but a storyline that was completely cut out. This was likely to give her more time with the slave storyline and because there was a quicker and easier way to introduce John Quincy on the plantation.

It’s going to be interesting to see how this storyline plays out moving forward? Will Claire still perform the surgery on him and will he fall in love with Pollyanne? Will Pollyanne even be introduced? We’ll just have to wait and see!
