Those who have read Voyager noticed an immediate change to Marsali and Fergus’ storyline. Outlander Season 4 quickly deals with that Fersali storyline change.
At the end of Outlander Season 3, Marsali and Fergus were on the ship back to Scotland. This wasn’t the case in “Voyager.” They’d remained in Jamaica as Marsali couldn’t travel at the time. There was a big question about how the storyline would change in Outlander Season 4. Would events from the book still happen in the series?
Without spoilers, the premiere episode of Outlander Season 4 will definitely deal with this storyline change quickly. You get hints from the start and the way the writers have dealt with it are confirmed by the very end of the episode.
How do I know? I watched the premiere while at NYCC and was excited to see if Fersali’s storyline would be handled immediately. The hints were ones I purposely looked out for.

- Outlander Season 7B: Will Diarmaid Murtagh return as Buck MacKenzie?
- Outlander Season 7B: Will Chris Fulton return as Rob Cameron?
- Will Dottie be in Outlander Season 7B?
- 3 characters who definitely won’t return in Outlander Season 7B
I’m not sure how it goes from here. It’s not clear how many episodes the two characters are in. However, the book storyline is followed at the very end of the episode without Fersali involved.
Book fans will likely be happy to hear that the change to the storyline is dealt with and, for the most part, the book is followed. There will be some timeline changes from the book to make the storyline work for TV, but book fans will recognize everything throughout the season.
One thing I will say is that those who haven’t read the books will be in no way lost throughout Outlander Season 4. Unless you knew there was a change to Fersali’s storyline at the end of Season 3, you won’t realize something need to be added in during the fourth season premiere.
