The Outlander Season 4 trailer showed a set of standing stones. Just where are they located and what does this mean for the season?
During the Outlander Season 4 trailer, Claire picks up a skull and points out a set of silver fillings. After that, we get flashes of a few events, including a shot of a set of standing stones. We knew filming had been at Craig na Dun (well, Clava Cairns) for this season, but now we’ve got a question. Were those stones in Scotland or in North Carolina?
Of course, as with many of these posts, there are some spoilers from the books.
It’s certainly possible that the standing stones are meant to be Craig na Dun. There’s a huge story point surrounding Brianna and Roger and time traveling abilities. But there’s something about the season that strikes me as it’s not meant to be Scotland.

No part of the Outlander Season 4 trailer showed Brianna and Roger. There was no other hint of Scotland unless I missed it. The focus was on North Carolina and the danger there.
That makes me think that this is the set of standing stones in North Carolina. The problem with this is these standing stones are supposed to be in the middle of a rhododendron hell. This isn’t supposed to be the open space that’s depicted in the trailer. In fact, here’s a picture of a rhododendron hell. This could hint at the stones actually being in Scotland but it could also hint that a slight change to the story is going to happen.
However, for those who want to know and haven’t read the books yet, there is another set of standing stones in “Drums of Autumn.” The standing stones in Outlander Season 4 could certainly have been in North Carolina. With it following the discussion of silver fillings and the worry of a warning, then it would make sense that it was the Colonies’ stones.
