What does the Outlander Season 5 filming start date mean for the series?
Cesar Domboy shared that he’d return for Outlander Season 5 filming in February. What does this start date mean for the season premiere?
Outlander Season 5 won’t start filming until February 2019. This isn’t that surprising since Caitriona Balfe had previously said they were getting seven months off filming. Both Balfe and Sam Heughan have movie projects coming up in the summer and there are many conventions. However, with the seven-month break between filming the Season 4 finale and Season 5 premiere, there are certainly questions about what it means for the Season 5 release date.
It looks like Starz has already planned for this break. Outlander Season 4 filming has just nine days left, which is only a little later than Season 3 filming wrapped last year. It would have been possible to get everything ready for a September premiere date like last year, which was probably the original plan. However, Season 4 won’t premiere until November, two months later than expected.

This possibly allows for the filming of Season 5 to start later. Bear in mind that filming for an Outlander season takes about nine months. This could be a little shorter for the fifth season with one less episode to film, but it will still take at least eight months and then time for production. That would mean with a February start date, filming for Outlander Season 5 won’t finish until at least October 2019.
We’re looking at January-February 2020 for the fifth season to hit the airwaves. It could even be pushed to March-April 2020. However, Starz and Sony do want to keep Droughtlander as short as possible, so the winter of 2020 seems like a better idea. This would mean 14-15 months after the premiere of the previous season, which matches the wait for Season 4.
All-in-all, the February start date for Outlander Season 5 filming matches the theories when Balfe said they’d get seven months off between the two seasons. And at least we know when the cast will be back together, which is more than we knew last year!
