Before Claire went back through the stones, Joe showed her bones from a Carribean cave. This was foreshadowing for the Outlander Season 3 finale, but why exactly did she react the way she did?

Time travel is weird and confusing. The more you think about it, the more of a headache you’ll get. In Outlander, it isn’t as confusing. Time is linear for the most part, but there is also a cycle. What Claire does in her future in the past occurs in her current timeline. See, that’s where the confusing part comes up!

Claire reacted to the bones because there was an energy that came off them. She was connected to the death of this person, even though it hadn’t happened in her timeline yet. It had happened in the past. Those bones belonged to Geillis Duncan Abernathy. Considering the stones involve magic, allowing someone to time travel, it’s not that surprising that there could be a type of magic or connection between Claire and the bones.

How were the bones there when Claire hadn’t done it yet?

More from Opinion

The real confusing part of this Outlander storyline is how Geillis’ bones could have been in the Jamaican cave. At this point, Claire had never gone to the past. She hadn’t killed Geillis to save her daughter, Brianna. Yet, in Geillis’ timeline, this had happened. Maybe this was what the magic was trying to tell Claire: She was responsible and would be responsible in Claire’s future.

This isn’t the first time there’s been a sense of a time loop. Claire got a shiver in the Outlander series premiere when she walked into the surgery at Castle Leoch. This was clearly linked to the fact that Claire had been there in the past–although it would take place in her future.

It was like a sixth sense that the place had more meaning. When it came to the bones, there was that sense that the bones had more meaning.
