Sam Heughan completes Edinburgh Marathon with personal best
Sam Heughan may have said his training was a little behind, but his Edinburgh Marathon was his best marathon yet.
When Sam Heughan decided his Peak Challenge would be two marathons in two months, he may not have expected the success he gained. His first marathon was the Stirling Marathon in April, which saw him land a personal best. He’s just beaten that with the Edinburgh Marathon over the May bank holiday weekend.
This personal best comes just weeks after saying that his training had been way-laid slightly. He’s worked hard on filming and also had the BAFTA afterparty, where he was a little worse for wear by the end of it. However, he clearly made up for his dip in training in the days leading up to the race.

The Edinburgh Marathon is the biggest of all marathons in Scotland, with a 10K and 5K race also taking place over the weekend. An estimated 35,000 people took part in the race on Sunday, with a number of records broken. For Heughan, it was his personal best by one minute. He also shared on his Twitter that he came 414th in the race, which sees a number of fun-runners, celebrities, and professional athletes.
Heughan’s race was the second of the two marathons in two months. Both were part of his Peak Challenge to raise money and awareness for Cahonas Scotland, a charity that raises awareness and removes the stigma of male cancers. The Just Giving page is still open for donations and at the time of writing this is 250% over his initial target of £15,000.
My Peak Challenge is an initiative that Heughan co-runs at the start of the year that members of the public are encouraged to sign up to. People set their own “Peak Challenge” and then get tips and advice from Heughan and other trainers to eat well, exercise safely, and improve their health and fitness levels. To help encourage others, Heughan set his own challenge this year.
