Outlander Season 4: How is Tobias Menzies back?
Fans spotted Tobias Menzies filming for Outlander Season 4. Just how is his return possible?
Tobias Menzies is certainly a beloved member of the Outlander cast. He showed his acting talents considerably over the last three years, taking on two roles vastly different from each other. However, both his characters died in the third season. Now that he’s been spotted filming Outlander Season 4, there are questions about how that’s possible.

Before looking at the hows and whys, it’s worth pointing out that Ron D. Moore had hinted that Menzies would return to Outlander in Season 4. While his characters may have been killed off, many fans wanted to see Menzies back on their screens. Moore acknowledged the formidable acting talents of Menzies, so it wasn’t surprising to hear that he wanted the actor to return.
Of course, many fans instantly questioned the chances of this happening. When Menzies was confirmed as Prince Philip in The Crown Season 3, there were questions over whether it was possible. Well, he has now been spotted filming for Outlander Season 4.
It’s all about the flashbacks
While many TV shows will avoid flashbacks as one of those cliche elements of storytelling, Outlander has owned them from the beginning. The first season was full of elements, including those flashes to the time Claire and Frank got married when Claire was preparing to marry Jamie. The third season also involved flashes of memories as early as the premiere, when Jamie remembered the events of Culloden while he laid on the battlefield.
It’s not surprising that there could be the use of flashbacks in the fourth season. The books are full of Brianna having flashbacks of Frank, so why couldn’t those memories come to life?
And it certainly looks like it will be flashbacks and memories. In one photo, it’s possible to spot Sophie Skelton, who plays Brianna in the series.
