Why Roger in Outlander is our #MCM this week
Roger Wakefield MacKenzie has an important role in the Outlander series. Here’s a look at the character from Season 3, as he takes the week’s place as our #ManCrushMonday.
Richard Rankin took on the role of Roger Wakefield MacKenzie and it was never going to be an easy feat. However, he took it on valiantly and portrayed the character beautifully. Outlander Seasons 2 and 3 couldn’t have found a better actor, even if certain appearance traits didn’t match.
He’s our #ManCrushMonday for this week. I’m specifically stating Outlander Season 3 Roger since he does go through changes and not everyone is caught up with the books. I want to keep this as spoiler-free as possible.

So, why is he so loveable and important? Why do we swoon for him, even though he’s not the warrior that Jamie Fraser is? Here’s a look at everything that makes him crush-worthy.
He welcomed Claire and Brianna in despite never really knowing them
Roger was just a wee boy when Claire and Frank had been guests of Reverend Wakefield. He was so young that he’d probably not remember much. And he certainly never met Brianna. Yet, when it came to offering up the guest room and welcoming Claire and Brianna in, he didn’t it without even thinking about it.
This was at a time that he was grieving. He’d just said goodbye to the man he viewed as his father. it takes a beautiful soul to open his home up like that.
He believed when Brianna wouldn’t
It takes a lot to believe a fairy tale that Claire had told. Yet, Roger was the one willing to listen. He even wanted Brianna to give her mom a chance to explain.
While he wasn’t in Outlander Season 2 much, that end scene proved that he believed. He’d gone searching for Jamie’s name in the records at Culloden. He was the one to figure out that Jamie was still alive. And then when it came to Season 3, he delved further and further into the research.
He kept going when it all looked over
Claire had hit a roadblock in her research. It was time for her and Brianna to return home and stop searching for any sign that Jamie Fraser was still around somewhere in the past. Roger didn’t give up, though. He continued looking for any hints that Jamie was somewhere, even though they couldn’t find the ship manifest for the trip to the Colonies.
When he did find something, he took it straight to Claire. This was a man making it clear that Claire couldn’t give up on the one she loved, showing us the extent he would go to for Brianna.
He remained with Brianna
Roger could have just gone home in Outlander Season 3. In fact, he could have just stayed in Scotland. Yet, he got the information and made his excuses for being in Boston. He chose to leave his life behind to remain with Brianna after Claire went back to the past.
Sure, the series doesn’t go into what happened with Roger and Brianna next. That’s something for Outlander Season 4, but for now he stayed with Brianna, putting her before himself.
