Would you have honestly ever believed Claire in Outlander?
Claire fell through the stones at Craig na Dun and landed 200 years in the past. Outlander may be a fictional tale, but if Claire told you this story in real life, would you believe her?
Let’s for a minute put ourselves in Frank’s shoes. Love him or hate him, he is one of the victims at the very start of Outlander. And I say at the very start. He didn’t choose to lose his wife through the stones. He wasn’t at fault in the events that took place on May 2, 1946.
When Claire returned, she told him the full story. She shared how she went to the past, met another man, and presumably how she attempted to stop the Battle of Culloden. There was information she held that nobody from the 1940s could know and eventually Frank chose to believe her tale.
But would you?

I want you to be honest with yourself to look at this from Frank’s point of view, just to play devil’s advocate here. Would you have believed Claire’s story of falling through time?
After all, she returned at a convenient time with a convenient story. She’d lost the man she loved but was carrying his child. In the 1940s, she’d need a man to support her to avoid the gossip and everything that would come from being a single mom and adulteress (which is what she would have been viewed as). She needed Frank to believe this tale and to choose to be with her, even if she was prepared to go it alone.
I admit I wouldn’t believe it
Frank is a better person than I am. I wouldn’t have believed her Outlander story. No way would I have taken her back if I was him. I’m not sure I know anyone else who would.
While he made mistakes later in their marriage, Claire wasn’t the innocent victim in the future. They both had their bad habits and their faults in this marriage, but up to Claire’s return, it’s hard to see how Frank was nothing but patient and kind. Of course, we don’t ever read his full story and it would be interesting to delve into it, but from what we know Frank took her back after some soul-searching.
