More from Spoilers

Joseph Wemyss is a Scottish bookkeeper. At least, he was until his circumstances turned dire and he was forced to sell himself and his daughter into servitude. He plays an important role in Brianna’s story when she steps through the stones and comes to the past. His goal is to sell his daughter as an indentured servant to someone who will care for her. After all, this isn’t something he wants to do and he’s a caring man.

Realizing that a man who wants to buy his daughter, Lizzie, is going to use her as his concubine, Joseph decides to sell Lizzie to Brianna. He only appears briefly in “Drums of Autumn” to sell his daughter, as Brianna takes Lizzie and sets sail to the Colonies to reach her parents before they perish in a house fire.

Will Joseph Wemyss return?

While we’ll only likely see Joseph in one episode of Outlander Season 4, there’s a chance that the character will show up later. We can’t say a definite yes, as it will depend on how much of the novels the showrunners stick to and how much is changed in the future.

In the novels, Joseph and his daughter are eventually reunited. He makes it to the Colonies, but still as an indentured servant. Jamie learns about this and buys Joseph before releasing him from the contract. As a freeman (along with his daughter), he’s allowed to live on fifty acres of land at Fraser’s Ridge. His property adjoins with Lizzie’s.

There’s always a chance that some of this will change in the series, depending on the amount of time the showrunners have to tell all the stories. For now, we’ll likely see him sell his daughter into servitude to Brianna.
