Outlander Season 5: What goes on in Claire’s surgery?
Claire will have her own surgery in Outlander Season 5. It beats operations in a theater! But what exactly will she do in that surgery?
When Jamie builds the Big House, he will also add a surgery for Claire. We’ll get to see that surgery in Outlander Season 5, something that was confirmed in the latest images for the upcoming season. We also get a tease of some of the things that will happen.
It’s certainly going to be tricky for Claire Fraser. She has the skills of a 20th-century surgeon but the limits of 18th-century medicine. She’ll need to work with what she knows and what she can get, which can mean growing her own herbs for treatments. She’ll also become a bit of a scientist to help treat her patients.

One of the things Entertainment Weekly shared with the images is that she’ll make her own medicine. Fans of the books will know that one of those medicines in penicillin. After all, it’s created with mold as a base, so it should be something she can recreate in the 18th century. It’s just going to take some time.
There are some surgeries that will happen, but no more theatrical performances! One of the surgeries will involve the Beardsley twins when they need to get their tonsils removed. This would have been something unheard of in the 18th century and tonsilitis could have certainly killed patients. Claire wants to use her 20th-century medical skills in the limitations of the time, but it’s going to bring risks.
It sounds like not too much about the surgery is going to change from the novels. At least, not the bones of what goes on in the story. Oh, and there’s still Adso around to cause trouble catch mice.
And the great news is that Diana Gabaldon loves Claire’s surgery. While it may not be exactly what we pictured from reading the books, it’s everything that it needs to be for the TV show. And remember that we’ll all read something and picture something entirely different.
