In The Fiery Cross, Jocasta marries Duncan Innes. He’s not been included in the show, but it looks like he’ll be in Outlander Season 5. What does this mean?

Outlander book fans have wondered about the role that Murtagh would play since being saved from death at Culloden in Season 3. In the fourth season, it looked like he would replace a character not introduced in the show. However, it now looks like Duncan Innes will be included in the series after all. What does this mean for Murtagh and Jocasta?

In “The Fiery Cross,” Duncan and Jocasta get married. It’s their wedding that the Frasers and MacKenzies are attending at the start of the novel. Fans immediately thought that Murtagh would take over Duncan’s role once he was saved at Culloden and in Ardsmuir, especially since Duncan had never been included in the TV series.

Some casting additions make it look like Duncan is going to be included in Season 5 after all. This could suggest that Jocasta and Murtagh won’t get to live their ‘happily ever after’ at all. With Murtagh as a wanted man, it would have been almost impossible for Jocasta and Murtagh to get married in Season 5. At least, until the tension with the Regulators has quietened down a little.

A since-deleted clip from David Berry’s Instagram takeover at New York Comic-Con showed that Jocasta would, in fact, get married. She needs to as a way to protect her estate. Despite having a good mind for business, men need other men to run the plantation. Jocasta needs someone who can be her man running the show, and Duncan would become that man in the books. Now it looks like he’ll become that man in the series.

While it means heartache for Jocasta and Murtagh, it’s probably a good idea to move on with the storyline. Jocasta would find herself too in the center of Jamie and Murtagh’s big problem right now. Murtagh also wouldn’t want to put someone he loves at risk, which would mean stepping away from a relationship with Jocasta and allowing her to be with Duncan.
